Chapter Fifty-One

The door to Charlotte’s room is closed. Mace knocks.

“Come in.”

He walks inside, carrying another shopping bag from Target.

Charlotte’s pressed against the wall, peering out the window.

“I’m sorry I worried you,” she says.

“What was the plan? Sneak out, kill some guy, be home in time for dinner?”

“Something like that.” Charlotte rubs her eyes with her palms.

“What happened? With the man you saw?”

“We tried to kill each other. I won.”

At her words Mace feels a sense of unease. Almost like nausea.

“He’s dead?”

“Maybe. I didn’t stick around to find out. I’m sorry, I don’t feel well.” Charlotte pushes off the wall and walks to the adjoining bathroom. Mace follows her and stands in the doorway. He’s surprised that, empty and a year removed, the bathroom is unfamiliar to him. He wonders if the sink was always close to the door, the shower this small.

“How did you find him?”

“Knew where he works.” Charlotte turns on the water, lets it fill her hands, gently rubs the blood from her cheeks, chin, forehead, lips. She gingerly dabs her face with a towel and leaves the towel damp and red.

“Do you need anything?” Mace asks.

She raises an arm and winces. “Maybe some help getting my shirt off.”

“I’ll get Eve.”

Charlotte shakes her head. “I trust you.”

Mace steps in the bathroom. Charlotte leans forward. He pulls her shirt up and over her head and arms. She whimpers a little, but that’s all.

There are bruises over her stomach. Bruises startling and detailed and they seem like they’ll never fade, as if they’re etched into her skin. Bruises like a map of pain and anguish; bruises like a watercolor painted by a sadist; bruises like her skin is a brittle shield barely able to protect her soul. He looks at her skin and sees memories of fists and feet and nails and teeth.

Charlotte notices Mace’s stare. But now, unlike when he first saw her face, she doesn’t try and hide the marks.
